The Bible and Homosexuality — Sodom and Gomorrah
It is claimed that : “Nowhere in scripture is homosexuality listed as the sin which condemned Sodom”
Genesis 19 1:11
1Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening as Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground.
2And he said, “Now behold, my lords, please turn aside into your servant’s house, and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may rise early and go on your way.” They said however, “No, but we shall spend the night in the square.“
3Yet he urged them strongly, so they turned aside to him and entered his house; and he prepared a feast for them, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.
4Before they lay down, the men … (Read more)
The Bible and Homosexuality: Introduction
There’s been a lot of renewed discussion (read: debate) over what the Bible says concerning homosexuality, especially where the “clobber verses” (listed below) are concerned. As it’s beginning to come up time and time again, I figured I would examine the clobber verses, both views for and against, and see if we, or I, can conclude where exactly the bible stands in regard to this issue (however obvious it may be for some on both sides). I’ll probably get one post in this series written every week, but we’ll see for sure what happens.
So then, this just serves as the (very) brief introduction.

What does monogamy have to do with it?
For the past few days I’ve been thinking about this view that Christians can be practicing homosexuals as long as that practice is kept within a ‘long term, monogamous, loving relationship’. There are a couple things I have a hard time understanding with this sort of argument. The first thing is that it seems to me as if we have biblical command’s (i.e., Genesis 2:20–24) being ignored and followed at the same time. In the case of Genesis most of us would have no problem with the ‘long term, monogamous, loving relationship’ part. Yet at the same time a lot of us would have a problem with the reality that it mentions, quite explicitly, that such a relationship is supposed to be heterosexual. We might say that just because it doesn’t mention homosexual relationships, doesn’t mean they’re forbidden. In the same breath, we would not point out that just because… (Read more)
Say what?!
Tony Jones has responded to the sort of argument I used in my previous reply to him and the response has me scratching my head. The core of Tony’s response is that first of all, everything is relative (this isn’t surprising). Second of all that the Biblical narrative as such doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter that the creation narrative only mentioned the creation of man and woman for each other. It also doesn’t matter that Jesus affirmed this in the New Testament; the book of Matthew and the Sermon on the Mount and in other places. Tony Jones equated the lack of mention of bisexuals, homosexuals, hermaphrodites etc., in Genesis and the sayings of Jesus with the fact that Jesus cast demons named Legion out of a man instead of calling this man’s ‘problem’ schizophrenia. That therefore, in the same way that a schizophrenic isn’t excluded from the kingdom of … (Read more)
It’s Genetic!
When Christians involve themselves in discussions of homosexuality, usually a couple things happen: (1) there is a failure to distinguish between homosexuality as a disposition and homosexual acts and (2) people view it as some sort of argument to assert that, since homosexuality must have a genetic origin, it’s acceptable and an orthodox reading of Scripture on the ‘homosexual issue’ is errant. Well to answer, (1) Scripture condemns homosexual acts and thus (2) appealing to one’s genes is neither here nor there.
To begin, a video by Ravi Zacharias on the acceptance of homosexuality within Christianity: is it possible to live a Christian life and be homosexual? As well, William Lane Craig’s podcast on how one can be Christian and homosexual:
What many Christians will disagree with (at least in my experience) is this notion that there should be a distinction created between homosexuality and homosexual acts. Surely, they … (Read more)
