About Me

So then, a little about me!

My name is Jeremy, I was born in January of 1987 and I hold dual Canadian-Finnish citizenship (though admittedly, a lot of the time I like to put Finnish first). I’m a student — and will always be — engaged in the never ending pursuit of wisdom; some times that comes through an (expensive) pursuit of knowledge, particularly a degree in religious studies which I hope to eventually turn into a PhD one day. Most importantly, I’m getting married May 29th (2010) to my wonderful Rebecca. I’m something of a book-worm, enjoy writing (even though I don’t believe I’m all that good at it) and tend to spend too much time distracting myself with games, mostly RPG’s (I enjoy a good story, wherever it’s found). This website is a way for me to get my thoughts out, to practice writing. I don’t know if it will ever be much more than that. However, we’ll see where things go as I go along.

A lot of people ask me why I choose to call my website “nascentthinker” (nascent isn’t exactly used in every day speech). I decided on the words ‘nascent thinker’ because of how I view myself.  That is to say that I view myself as young, learning, probably in some ways naive; someone who is just starting to really become aware of society and culture and the world–hence, “nascent”. As for why I choose “thinker,” well, two reasons; because I’m giving my thoughts on whatever subject I choose to write on and because as an (armchair) “thinker” I believe I’m quite new and unlearned. Though in some ways I’m standing on the shoulders of giants, so things shouldn’t be so bad.  What I write here is not necessarily my definitive thought ‘on the subject’. Rather, what follows is a collection of my views and thoughts as I consider them today. Who knows, I might — and probably will — disagree with them a few years down the road. This is an experiment in self-expressions, writing and learning.

I would like to say that the focus on my website will mostly be on philosophy, theology and culture, though I’m not sure that will always be the case. I’m not a very good philosopher or theologian and I’m probably not all that good at analyzing culture. However, what can I expect if I consider myself to be new? I’m certain I will improve at these things; even if not in this or in the near future. I don’t know if what I write will be offensive; probably to some it will be, to others it won’t. I make no apologies for that where it can’t be helped. I once asked a very gifted writer how he was able to write without seeming so condescending. His answer was that he had no clue, but that he told the truth as he saw it. That’s what I intend to do.

The title for my blog  ‘Contemplations Along The Way’ refers to’The Way’ an early designation for the Christian faith (Acts 9:2; 2 Peter 2:21; John 14:6). These are my thoughts as I journey in this world as a Christian (to the joy and dismay of many, I’m sure).
